American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is New York’s best family museum, much like its London counterpart. One of the few Big Apple buildings built wider than it is tall, it’s an imposing, sprawling structure overlooking Central Park in the heart of Manhattan.

As one of the world’s pre-eminent scientific and cultural institutions, the Natural History museum is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the mysteries of life, from the secrets of the universe to the intricacies of human culture and physiology. It is widely regarded as a global leader in scientific study through its enormous collections and extraordinary exhibitions.

Wander the artefacts of ancient Egypt, explore the ocean’s depths, see a life-size blue whale suspended in mid air, and of course, discover the world of dinosaurs in three giant halls dedicated to our toothy precursors, all within the museum’s walls. An IMAX cinema also brings all of these worlds to life even further. The museum itself may even feel familiar – it’s been the star of several Hollywood films.

AMNH Food Court

The AMNH Food Court is one of only 14 restaurants in the US with a 3-star rating from the Green Restaurant Association. Locally sourced food with sustainable packaging and non-toxic cleaning products make it the only non-commercial restaurant with this rating in the country. We’re happy to pay slightly more for such good, environmentally friendly food, whose vast menu has something for everyone – from ‘T-Rex Burgers’ to gluten-free options.

AMNH Cafés

Between the three cafés in the museum, you should be able to find anything you fancy. You can grab a healthier option at Café on 4 whilst checking out some classic NYC views, have some typical NYC-style street food at the Starlight Café, or find your perfect panini enjoyed with an ice cold beer at Café on One.

Main Shop

The AMNH museum has four shops. The main shop holds typical museum merchandise, with other three dedicated to products relating to the wings that house them. There is pieces for adults, but it’s the kids that’ll stretch your wallet to breaking point. Parents tend to find themselves in the DinoStore buying stuffed T-Rex toys, or the Cosmic Shop buying science kits.
