Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum

Please note: This destination is under renovation until late 2014.

New York’s answer to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum is the only space in America devoted exclusively to the exhibition of historic and contemporary design.

Set in an impressive Georgian style townhouse mansion that was originally built for Andrew Carnegie, and surrounded by a beautiful terrace and gardens, the Cooper-Hewitt offers a welcome respite from the bustling metropolis right outside its grounds.

The vast collection now exceeds a quarter of a million individual design artefacts including rare drawings from Michelangelo, textile designs from the Weiner Werkstatte, and graphics from important contemporary designers. There is also architectural drawings, industrial plans, furniture, metalwork, and jewellery pieces.

October is the time to see the Cooper-Hewitt at its most impressive, when the museum’s Design Week events culminate in the National Design Awards – a showcase of the best design in America. If you’re a New Yorker, membership benefits include an invitation to the exclusive Summer Benefit party, set in the stunning gardens overlooking Fifth Avenue.

Like most museum shops, this one holds many publications relating to the museum’s exhibitions. But the abundance of design books and design objects, such as the Maison Martin Margiela Collapsible Glasses, and Alessi Juicy Citrus Squeezer by Philippe Starck, set this shop apart – and make it a must see for design lovers.
