Helmut Newton Foundation

The Helmut Newton Foundation is a gathering place for fashionistas and art lovers alike, attracting visitors from all over the world. It’s dedicated to the promotion and preservation of 20th century visual style icon Helmut Newton, who shaped the fashion photography industry by bringing in an inspired and artistic eye.

There are several films in the permanent collection that shed light on the development of Newton’s imagery. His cameras and photographic equipment and accessories are also on display, alongside numerous publications such Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair, and Der Spiegel, which help illustrate his development as a photographer.

Newton was forced to leave his hometown of Berlin in 1938 due to his Jewish origins, but his love for his home city is evident in his early photographs. The big talking point, however, are Newton’s nudes. Striking, controversial, and intimate, they’re an essential view, but make this one for adults rather than families.

The café has limited and irregular opening hours which is why we recommend having a little walk to the Ku’damm – the centre of West Berlin – where you can find plenty of cafés and restaurants and explore the new real-estate projects, such as the Bikini House and the Zoofenster.

Be careful! This is a photography lover’s paradise. The temptation to buy endless books is huge, especially if you’re lucky enough to find the object of your desire ‘reduced’. Just bear in mind that these books increase the weight of your luggage enormously! Lighter objects are available, with Newton’s prints on t-shirts, pillboxes, tape measures, mirrors and jewellery.
