Jewish Museum New York

Of great significance to New York City is The Jewish Museum, located in the elegant gothic-style Warburg mansion, on the city’s 5th Avenue ‘museum mile’.

Founded on a small collection of 26 donated items in 1904, the museum has grown at a staggering rate. Now displaying the largest collection of art and media installations dedicated to Jewish culture outside of Israel, it reaches around 27,000 pieces in total.

Including everything from archaeological artefacts to cutting edge art, the museum explores the ancient, spiritual, and global facets of Judaism. The scope of the material exhibited is truly breathtaking and its story is equally intense.

Café Weissman

You can expect nothing less than great kosher food at Café Weissman. It’s the perfect way for visitors to encounter, embrace, and fall in love with a culture that may seem distant to them. The café is famous for its Lox but the soups and sandwiches are just as delicious. Architect Kevin Roches and artist Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend have together fashioned this lovely dining space, creating a delightful all round culinary experience.

Shop

The Jewish Museum, rather refreshingly, doesn’t sell postcards or other such generic museum merchandise but sells interesting objects that compliment its collection. The ritual objects, jewellery, and books range in value, some high end and others more affordable, but all wonderfully handpicked. It’s a real pleasure shopping here and it rounds off an excellent museum experience.

Closed Saturdays.
