Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art

Berlin’s answer to MoMA PS1, the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art is a truly contemporary institution. It holds no dusty permanent collection or stale displays, but instead presents exciting, changing exhibitions that allows them to keep their finger on the pulse of all that is new, often commissioning new work from young artists. This flexibility, alongside its non-profit, status means that the Kunst-Werke Institute is dedicated to enthralling the public, perhaps as the leftover influence of it’s humble beginnings – a 1990s project from a collective of artists and students. This untraditional nature is visible even in the building itself, which is an old margarine factory. It’s only natural then, that the institute features all manner of contemporary media, with sound art, video installations, and performance works often shown alongside works with more traditional materials. This is perhaps Germany’s ultimate destination for seeing unfiltered, often untouched works that are sure to excite and surprise – the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art is such a driving force for progress that we even have them to thank for the first Berlin Biennale.
