Morgan Library and Museum

Steel magnate Pierpont Morgan’s vast book collection and library is a bibliophile’s dream, perfectly housed in one of New York’s most historic buildings in Midtown Manhattan, close to Grand Central Station. A treat in its own right, the museum and library are ornate and opulent with beautiful frescoes.

The museum and library house a huge rotating collection of rare books, master drawings and prints, manuscripts, personal letters and correspondences. Priceless treasures are numerous but highlights include three Gutenberg bibles, rare collections of illuminated medieval manuscripts, Da Vinci sketches, Dickens first editions including A Christmas Carol and the scraps of paper Bob Dylan originally wrote Blowin’ in the Wind on.

A programme of temporary exhibitions adds to the plentiful literary bounty. Recent showings of Jane Austen’s letters and manuscripts and Bob Dylan’s music, letters, and merchandise have been amongst our favourites.

Be sure to wander the Renzo Piano designed walkway that connects the Morgan’s two buildings. Encased in steel and glass, it almost feels like a display case for the museum itself.
