Musée du Quai Branly

The most impressive building built in Paris since the Pompidou, the Musée du Quai Branly sits in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower on the curve of the Seine. Designed by award-winning architect Jean Nouvel, also responsible for the Fondation Cartier, its a $265 million marvel. The Mondrian style exterior of the long exhibition hall contrasts beautifully with the large botanical façade, and a long curving internal walkway leads to a partitioned exhibition space.

The huge collection of more than 25,000 pieces covers indigenous Oceanic, American, Asian and African art and artefacts. With around 3,500 pieces on display at any one time, half of the exhibition space is dedicated to temporary exhibits. The museum also holds an important reference and archive library.

Before you leave, be sure to take a stroll around the beautiful gardens. Protected from the bustle of Paris by a glass wall, they offer a surprisingly tranquil retreat.
