Musée Gustave Moreau

Established and designed by the painter Gustave Moreau himself, in order for him to show his work exactly as he intended, Moreau’s eponymous museum is truly unique. A window into his strange, Symbolist genius, Moreau lived and worked here for a number of years, completing it only two years before his death.

The Gustave Moreau collection holds more than 4,800 drawings, 450 watercolours, a number of sculptures, original furniture, and personal curiosities such as pickled birds and taxidermy animals. But it’s the artist’s oil paintings and the general preservation of his extraordinary home that’s of most interest. Walking through it feels both intimate and invasive.

Known as a painter instrumental in the fruition and progression of Symbolism, and for his interests in biblical and mythological imagery, and later, Modernism and the abstract, Moreau’s prolific contributions to the art world are evident throughout the museum.

Make sure you also visit Moreau’s private apartment, crammed with personal memorabilia, it has remained virtually untouched for a century and, is a fascinating glimpse behind the art of this extraordinary painter.
