Museum at FIT
Undoubtedly one of the world’s fashion capitals, New York is perhaps the only appropriate setting for the revered Fashion Institute of Technology, or FIT as it’s commonly known. Even more fitting is it’s Seventh Avenue location – they don’t call it Fashion Avenue for nothing.
Recognised as one of the world’s leading fashion schools, it combines a museum space with a 10,000-strong student body. The permanent collection comprises around 50,000 garments and accessories dating back to the 18th century with pieces from important designers like Balenciaga, Chanel and Dior.
A magnet for fashionistas from around the world, the collection focuses on clothes that have played a pivotal role in fashion’s evolution, and is a great opportunity to see how the old influences the new.
FIT also plays host to several innovative and award-winning events and exhibitions, 2011’s Daphne Guinness show, for example, focused on the muse’s personal style and favourite fashion pieces.
Based in the centre of New York’s fashion district, FIT is also the perfect launch pad to get inspired before you hit the boutiques.
The members of the Fashion Merchandising Club run the fabulous FIT Fashion Store. Here they offer clothing, bags, jewellery, and shoes, all of which have been created by final year FIT students. All the profits go back into the Merchandising Club and help improve the school and campus events, making it a great way to support upcoming designers and find exclusive pieces.
