Museum of Arts and Design

Housed in an extraordinary Tetris style tower building next to Central Park, the Museum of Arts and Design is worthy of its nickname – MAD. Its collection represents the height of design, with displays dedicated to works of contemporary handmade art and design.

MAD looks to explore the blurred distinctions between art, design and craftsmanship through a variety of media, from paper, to glass, to digital design. It promotes the concept that these are intrinsically linked from the very beginning of the creative process.

A common pilgrimage for those who work in the design industry, MAD also offers a stimulating calendar of shows, special events, talks, and workshops to engage its audience, with its success measurable in fast-growing member numbers. The 144-seater theatre has also added art-house and mainstream film to its list of assets.

MAD offers a great place to dine in its top floor Robert New York City restaurant. Think trippy designs, sensational views, good food, and cultured conversation.

Eat & Drink

Museum of Arts and Design

The views of Columbus Circle, Central Park and Broadway are the real attraction here. However, the ambience, food, and waiting staff deserve just as much credit. For an intimate meal, we recommend sitting at the windows, but for a more laid back approach you can sit on the sofas and enjoy the excellent interior design and live music.

The Store

This shop is a refreshing break for the generic museum shop and common content. Many of the items on display in the museum, like Rob Brandt’s Crinkle Cups and Judith Weber’s teapot and teacups, are available to buy in this shop. The jewellery is also a massive hit, with a lot of New Yorkers visiting the museum just to do their accessory shopping.
