Museum of Modern Art

A space that ‘fuels creativity, ignites minds and provides inspiration’, New York’s Museum of Modern Art – or MoMA – is one of the most respected and popular galleries in the world.
Initially founded as an educational institute, it remains a place of learning but now incorporates research, preservation, display and entertainment into its mission statement to be the foremost museum of modern art in the world.
The permanent collection is spectacular. Photography, film, paintings, drawings, illustrations, sculptures, designs, prints, books and architectural plans – its range seems limitless. Beautifully and sympathetically exhibited, it’s easy to lose a day wandering and following your thoughts.
Temporary exhibitions are varied and creative. From artist retrospectives to in depth explorations of left field topics, the calendar is packed with enough choice to appeal to most art lovers most of the time.
If the art feast leaves you hungry, The Modern is MoMA’s Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant or you could sample one of the cafés hosted by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group.

The Modern

Simply sensational, this restaurant is riddled with awards including a much coveted Michelin Star. Chefs Gabriel Kreuther and Marc Aumont have created one of the best menus that we’ve come across – it may not be cheap but you really do get what you pay for. This is elegant fine dining at its best, and everything from the table bread to table service is five-star. You won’t be disappointed, nor will your date.

Lunch: Monday–Friday, 12:00–2:00 p.m.
Dinner: Monday–Thursday, 5:30–10:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5:30–11:30 p.m.

Cafe 2

This café is of the highest standard, the food is seasonal and fresh, and everything is prepared in view of the customers by a capable and confident kitchen. It’s the MoMA’s most casual eatery with long communal tables and easy, quick food. It is a little pricey but the quality justifies this slight inconvenience. We recommend eating here to hastily refuel before continuing on your museum path.

Terrace 5

As always at the MoMA, we were very impressed with Terrace 5. Everything from the cool, edgy, modern design and professional staff, to the great cocktails, à la carte menu, and stunning deserts were at a high-end standard and available at affordable prices. If the weather allows we suggest sitting on the outdoor terrace, and taking in the views of New York and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden.

Wednesday – Thursday 11.00 – 17.00
Friday 11.00 – 19.30

MoMA Design and Book Store

The MoMA’s three shops set a benchmark for all museums. The design store sells objects from the museum’s collection and other masterpieces of modern design, while the bookstore provides an ideal peaceful environment for finding your perfect art or design publication. The Design and Book Store has the best of both and more, including prints and reproductions.
