Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum

The stunning Oscar Niemeyer building that houses the Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum has become a true landmark for the city of Rio de Janeiro. 16 metres tall with a cylindrical base, and perched on a cliffside overlooking the ocean, it has been likened to both a UFO and flower, with the architectural interest making this a destination in itself.

The views of the mountains, ocean, and city from inside the building are stunning, and many visitors come for this experience alone. They stay, however, for the displays. The permanent collection is largely contemporary, and features some excellent works, many of which are multimedia installations, by Brazilian and international artists. The changing and temporary exhibitions are also fantastic, often including photographic and film works.

Beyond the visual, the Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum hosts great public programmes, particularly for children and families, and is also home to a wonderful research and general library, making this a brilliant destination all round, for visitors and locals alike.
