Whitney Museum of American Art

A real New York gem, the Whitney houses the most comprehensive collection of American artworks from the 20th century to the modern day, with a focus on works by living artists. Located in a starkly industrial but beautiful Marcel Breuer-designed Bauhaus building in an otherwise grungy area of the Big Apple, there’s something of a renegade feel to the exposed concrete and vast ceilings that crackles with artistic innovation.

Dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting and exhibiting, the Whitney’s signature exhibition is the Biennial, which surveys and documents the most recent developments in American art and acts as a cultural barometer for the entire art world. The Whitney also hosts a lively series of exhibitions, performances, and films from American luminaries and influencers past and present – think Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. It is also rather telling that artists including Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, and Cindy Sherman hosted their first museum retrospectives here.

And when your appetite for the aesthetic is sated, head to Untitled, Danny Meyer’s ultra-cool oak-panelled basement dining experience.
